What is Suicide Prevention Week?
The American Association of Suicidology established National Suicide Prevention Week to raise awareness about suicide prevention, offer support and resources to those affected by suicide, and encourage efforts to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Why does Suicide Prevention matter?
Suicide is a significant public health issue in Louisiana. In 2021, the state recorded 720 suicide deaths and 159,000 adults had thoughts of suicide. The rate of suicide in Louisiana has been higher than the national average, with recent years showing a steady increase, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

How can I help prevent suicide?
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s #BeThe1To campaign outlines actionable steps to support people in crisis.
These steps are:
• Ask: Show you care by asking someone if they are considering suicide.
• Be There: Listen without judgment to provide a sense of relief.
• Keep Them Safe: Help reduce access to means of self-harm.
• Help Them Stay Connected: Create a network of support.
• Follow Up: Check in on their wellbeing over time.
We can all play a role in preventing suicide.
