“Disability Pride Month is a worldwide month-long celebration that commemorates the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, more commonly known as ADA,” said Dr. Scott Meche, Developmental Disability Division Director at Imperial Calcasieu.
Celebrated for the first time in 1990, this month is celebrated to honor the history, struggles, and challenges faced by those with disabilities.
“It was important at that time because there were numerous barriers to inclusion in our society for folks with disabilities. It helped break some of these barriers. We need to acknowledge that we have about 15 million Americans in our society today that live with one or more disabilities,” Meche said.
